Updates for the Mediacurrent Contrib Half Hour weekly meeting

After two years of an internal meeting to discuss our open source contribution efforts we relaunched it as a weekly community meeting. Each week we’ve had a small but supportive group look at different topics. After four meetings I wanted to share some updates with you on how the meeting has been going and some plans for the future.

Meeting recordings

I had promised to provide videos for the meetings and they’re finally now available.

  • November 30th, 2017
Our first meeting where we looked at finding and applying a fix for a bug.
  • December 7th, 2017
In our second meeting we discussed processes for tracking the patches that are used on a project.
  • December 14th, 2017
We looked at different options for running Drupal locally.
  • January 4th, 2018
For our first meeting of 2018 we looked at the steps to rerolling a patch.

Note: transcripts / captioning is being worked on.

Now that I have the process down we’ll be able to get them uploaded more quickly in the future.

Bumps along the road

One thing that I quickly realized was that in my efforts to help identify a meeting time I completely overlooked one of the communities existing meetings. The Drupal Diversity and Inclusion (DD&I) group has a meeting at the exact same time on the exact same day. As I personally feel the DD&I group’s efforts are extremely important to the community, I didn’t want to take people away from that initiative, so something had to change.

Another issue I noticed was that the weekly presentations and subsequent focused discussion weren’t leaving any time to have general Q&A - unfocused discussions, as it were. This was one of the main original goals of the meeting, so there needs to be time for this.

New meeting time

The meetings will now be at:

New meeting schedule

To make more room for general Q&A we’re going to delay each topic-focused meeting to alternate with the Q&A meetings. This will change the schedule to the following:

  • January 4th: Rerolling patches (last week)
  • January 11th: General Q&A
  • January 18th: How to report a bug or feature request
  • January 25th: General Q&A
  • February 1st: Creating a patch for a bug or feature request
  • February 8th: General Q&A
  • February 15th: How to report a security problem
  • February 22nd: General Q&A
  • March 1st: Finding and improving documentation
  • March 8th: General Q&A
  • March 15th: Writing tests
  • March 22nd: General Q&A
  • March 29th: Planning a project release

That will keep us busy for a few months, and in March we’ll work out what topics we want to cover later.

Send me your questions!

As part of the general Q&A time I’d like to invite you to post questions ahead of time. If there are particular issues on drupal.org you’re having problems with, let me know and we can take a look at it as a group. Maybe there’s a topic you think hasn’t been discussed before, or maybe you’d like to know how to work with certain processes.

I’m also interested to hear from you if you’re not interested in joining them - what might entice you to join?

Either which way, do let me know!

Refine, repeat

With the new schedule we’re hoping that we’ll both have a few more attendees, and leave people free to help out on another very important community initiative. I look forward to seeing you on the next meeting, this and every Thursday at 1pm EST!
